REGISTERING A DEATH

To book an appointment to register a death, please contact the Essex County Council registration service on 0345 603 7632. Appointments can be booked over the phone from 8.30am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Alternatively you can book an appointment online at www.essex.gov.uk/registrations

You have a legal requirement to register the death within 5 working days except in certain circumstances, where the period may be extended to 14 days. If the coroner is investigating the death, and after the investigation is over, the registrar’s office will notify you when you are able to attend.

WHO CAN REGISTER A DEATH?

• A relative
• A person present at the death
• A legally registered civil partner
• Someone who lives in the property where the person died
• A person arranging the funeral with the funeral director
• A responsible person from the hospital or home where the person died
